“Your Condo/HOA Tip of the Day” is all about the latest hot topics due to the recent statutory changes to community association law. Today the focus is on Florida’s Gov. Rick Scott’s eleventh hour veto of HB 653 to amend the condo fire sprinkler retrofitting and engineered life safety systems (ELSS) law. Safety aside, the big issue is cost, particularly to those living on a fixed income. Interestingly, last week in Honolulu, a deadly fire broke out in a high rise condo. Lawmakers there are calling for retrofitting fire sprinkler systems AND are looking into subsidizing the cost via tax credit to the associations; installment plans for residents; and low interest loans to those on fixed incomes. Do you think Florida’s lawmakers should consider this approach?
